Lush Heritage™ is primarily a home and garden journal with an emphasis on preservation and environmental conservation. It will chronicle my conservation efforts, DIY landscaping projects, interior design activities, and other bits of this and that.
Unbeknownst to me at the time, the story behind this website began more than a decade ago when I bought a couple of strategically located acres in my small hometown. The goal was to ward off potential development of a former farm. Shortly thereafter, I bought a nearby parcel more than double that size to prevent a house (or two) from being built on it. Twelve years and two corporate layoffs later, I’ve been fortunate enough to acquire 25+ acres that house nine buildings, including two 1700s homesteads.
I’m thrilled and grateful that I was able to buy these properties even though I have so much more to learn and do: the little house needs to be renovated and decorated (and kept mouse-free), the big house needs to be decorated (and kept squirrel-free), and large areas of the property are overgrown. Those are just some of the highlights. To complicate matters, I work in a city that is more than three hours away from my hometown so I basically only have the weekends in which to get everything done.
After maddening experiences with contractors, I began to do much of the tough landscaping myself. I soon became quite handy with a chainsaw and various other outdoor tools and equipment although I’d never handled them before. I liked the results and the fact that I was saving a lot of money. One day it struck me that maybe other people were facing similar challenges and searching for solutions. That’s when I decided to create this website, with the hope that my DIY adventures could interest or benefit others.
My main goal for this precious land has always been to ensure that it will never be developed or subdivided. As its latest steward, I feel privileged to restore and maintain its beauty and to protect it for future generations. I’m also having quite a bit of fun despite all the hard work!
