I’ve decided to review some of the products that I’ve bought and used to reclaim/maintain my 25+-acre property in the hopes that it may help others make more informed purchasing decisions. Product reviews are sometimes written in exchange for free products, rendering the reviews suspect, or they’re just cut-and-paste summaries from the manufacturers’ own websites, limiting their usefulness. And because I’ve found that most machine and tool product reviews are written by and for men, I plan to highlight from time to time some issues that may be of particular interest to other women.
For comparison’s sake:
1. I’m a bit taller than the average woman (5 feet 8½ inches tall) and in relatively decent physical shape. On a strength scale of 1-10, with 10 being the strongest, I’d say I’m a 7.5.
2. I prefer to buy more machine than I think I need at the outset but that is still within my relatively conservative comfort zone to use.
3. Ease of operation is paramount. Using mechanical stuff is usually not self-evident to me so I shy away from buying anything that is complicated or otherwise difficult to use.
4. I avoid dealing with anything manual (ignition, gear shifts, etc.) whenever possible. I could drive a stick shift in a dire emergency (and likely damage the transmission), but I hope I’m never in that situation!
5. I tend to be hard on equipment: I try to be careful, but I seem to hit every rock possible when I’m mowing or brush hogging. I also have a bad habit of twisting keys in ignitions hard enough for them to bend in just a few months of regular use.
6. Lastly, I’m frugal, but I will spend a decent chunk of change on an item when it makes long-term sense. I do believe that you get what you pay for. That said, I’m not averse to buying re-conditioned equipment, depending on the item and my intended purpose/goal.
